About Me

I grew up as the youngest of a very large family.  It may sound strange but pregnancy, birth, and babies were always a part of my life.  When you grow up in a large family like mine, it often seems as if someone amongst the group is always pregnant and there is never a shortage of babies and children around.  Although I was fascinated from an early age by the idea of bringing life into the world, it was not until much later that I realized my calling.  Since the first birth that I witnessed, I knew that I wanted to help women and their families during this sacred life event.  I was a nursing student at Boston College at that time and I was immediately inspired to begin learning about the art of midwifery.

I decided to work first as a labor & delivery nurse before going back to school.  I worked as a nurse for five years and had the opportunity to help with over 1000 births.  I eventually received my midwifery training from SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY.  During that time, I had the amazing opportunity to work along side a homebirth midwife in Lancaster County, PA.  My experiences there, primarily with the Amish and Mennonite communities, have greatly influenced my philosophy and practice.  Although I was trained as a CNM, I now like to practice a traditional form of midwifery.

As a midwife, I have served women in various settings.  I have attended births at home, in a free-standing birth center, and in the hospital.  But my love is for homebirth...there is just nothing like it!

I live in Maryland with my partner Steven, our beautiful daughter Casuarina, and handsome son Keanu.  (Plus our two rabbits, Chloe and Stevie, the cats, the chickens,  and the goats!)

When I am not working with my clients, I love to work in my garden.  I enjoy growing fresh, organic vegetables and herbs to nurture my family and friends.  I also love playing out with the goats.  My new passion is making delicious yogurt, kefir, ice cream, and cheeses with the fresh goat's milk.

I enjoy using herbs to make nourishing teas and herbal medicine.  I have had the honor to study herbal medicine making through the Wisewoman healing tradition.

I am also an avid knitter.  My grandmother taught me the art at age 10 and I have been knitting ever since!  I have also recently learned how to spin.  I look forward to making cashmere yarn from my own goat's fleece.  (I just need more hours in the day!!)

Another love: Travel...

...Aahhh, to be on the beaches of Barbados again!
